9 Most Romantic Places in France That Will Make You Fall in Love Instantly

When you think of the most romantic places to travel to in France, one magical city probably comes to mind…and you’re absolutely right. But lucky for us romantics, whether partnered or solo, France offers far more swoon-worthy spots than you could ever dream of.

romantic places

I’ve been lucky to visit France several times over the years, and each trip left me more enchanted than the last. I’ve even done a month-long road trip across different regions, uncovering hidden gems and learning about the unique charms each area holds. Earlier this year, I packed up my things in NYC and made the leap to live in France to immerse myself in everything this country has to offer. So my journey to uncover more of France’s romantic places continues.

And don’t think these destinations are just romantic places for couples. Oh no, no. They’re just as magical for embracing self-love, going an adventure with a close friend, or sharing the moment with your furry pal. (My dog, Momo, has even played the role of accidental wingwoman more than once!)

In this post, I’ll be sharing 9 most romantic places in France that will make you fall in love instantly.

Romantic places

Romantic places #1. Paris: the City of Love

Paris bistro in January

What makes it one of the most romantic places

Paris isn’t called the City of Love for nothing. From moonlit strolls along the Seine to sharing a quiet moment at the top of Montmartre, every corner of Paris seems destined for romance.

A brief history of Paris

Paris in the 18th and 19th centuries was a creative hub and a source for inspiration for writers and artists, like Victor Hugo, Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway. This mingling of art and literature with the charming cobblestone streets and cafes has created an atmosphere that continues today. It evokes passion and creativity that make Paris, France a romance capital of the world.

Top romantic things to do

  • Have a picnic in Parc des Buttes-Chaumont: This lesser-known park feels like an urban oasis, perfect for an intimate picnic.
  • Evening Seine cruise: Watch the city lights sparkle as you glide under iconic bridges.
  • Have a mid-day coffee or glass of wine at Les Deux Magots while imagining yourself as one of the great writers during the Belle Epoch.

Insider tips

  • Honestly, there are endless romantic places in Paris. So wander around and get lost in the intimate streets of Le Marais, where every turn reveals quiet cafés and bistros nestled within its distinctive, historic architecture.

Romantic places #2. Annecy: the Gateway to the Alps

What makes it one of the most romantic places

Annecy is one of those special places that makes you believe in love at first sight. Between the fairytale canals, views of uniquely shaped Alpine mountains, and a glimmering clear lake, the “Gateway to the Alps” feels like it’s straight out of a romantic daydream. It’s seriously a love story that writes itself, right before your eyes.

A brief history of Annecy

This little alpine town actually started off as a fishing village along the lake around 3100 BC, and archeological digs have revealed buildings that go as far back as 4000 and 1500 BC! Although, the ancient town you’re probably imagining right now would look nothing like the colorful town it is today.

Top romantic things to do

  • Stroll the Old Town: Wander the cobblestone streets and admire the charming canals and windows lined with flower boxes.
  • Bike around Lake Annecy: Take in the panoramic views and stop for a lakeside picnic. It’s around 15€ for half-day or 25€ from the shop’s opening to closing hours. You don’t have to do the whole lake. But if you do, it takes an hour or so without breaks. I would also recommend renting an ebike because there are a few steep climbs on the route around the lake. But if you’re up for the challenge, go for it! It’s definitely doable, coming from someone who did it with several breaks or walking the bike up the hills.
  • Visit Château d’Annecy: Explore the town’s hilltop castle for history and stunning views.

Insider tips

  • During the summer, swimming in Lake Annecy is a huge relief from the scorching heat. I went in August, and I wore a bikini underneath my normal clothes for the whole week I was there. That way, you and your boo will be ready for a dip anytime.
  • Most beaches around the lake are not dog-friendly. However, there’s a special area of the lake near Annecy itself where dogs are allowed! Aptly named Baignade des Chiens. Momo had a few swims in there to cool off, and it definitely did the trick.

Romantic places #3. Colmar: Little Venice in France

What makes it one of the most romantic places

Colmar feels like stepping into a storybook with its colorful half-timbered houses, winding canals, and whimsical charm. This Alsatian gem just an hour outside of Strasbourg is often compared to a real life fairytale village. Fun fact: Remember Sophie’s village in Hayao Miyazaki’s film Howl’s Moving Castle? Miyazaki was inspired by Colmar and used it as his reference!

A brief history of Colmar

Colmar is in the Haut-Rhin department and Alsace region, an area that has changed hands between France and Germany over the centuries. This two-culture influence is evident in the cuisine and its beautifully preserved architecture gives it a unique charm rarely found elsewhere.

What I found most fun and amusing the first time I was there was seeing very-German street and village names throughout the area, like Ammerschwihr and Niedermorschwihr. I had to keep reminding myself I was in France!

Top romantic things to do

  • Explore Petite Venise (Little Venice, France): Take a nice walk or a gondola-like boat ride along the scenic canals. It costs between 6€ and 10€ per person for a short, 25–30-minute ride. Prices may vary depending on the season, time of day, and the operator, so be sure to check.
  • Wander the Old Town: Admire the colorful, half-timbered homes and flower-filled window boxes that make the town feel like a fairytale.

Insider tips

  • Visit in December to experience Colmar’s magical Christmas market, where the entire town transforms into a magical snow globe wonderland and you can pretend you’re in your own Hallmark Holiday rom-com movie.

Romantic places #4. Provence: Lavender Fields

What makes it one of the most romantic places

Provence captures the essence of romance with its rolling hills covered in lavender, golden sunsets over rustic villages, and the leisurely pace of life. Every moment feels timeless and serene.

A brief history of Provence

Provence has been a cultural crossroads since Roman times, known for its fertile lands and mild climate. The region’s villages and vineyards have inspired countless artists, from Van Gogh to Cézanne. (Can you tell?)

Top romantic things to do

  • Stroll through lavender fields: If you visit during July or August, you’ll be treated with endless fields of purple stretching as far as the eye can see and the nose can smell, particularly around Valensole or Luberon.
  • Explore hilltop villages: Get lost in the cobbled streets of Gordes or Roussillon, both dishing out breathtaking views and quaint charm.
  • Savor local flavors: Grab a basket and head to the Provençal markets for fresh produce, tapenade, and local honey, then go and enjoy a picture-perfect picnic. Imagine gazing out on to the French countryside while sipping on some local rosé wine. Yeah, physically I’m here writing this, but mentally, I’m in Provence doing just that.

Insider tips

  • Rent a car in France to drive out and explore the villages around Provence. I use Europcar and Hertz regularly, and I’ve experienced friendly customer service for both, especially at Europcar. Locations in bigger cities will more than likely have an attendant who can speak some English, especially in Paris. But do still try to speak a little French to show you’re trying! A little effort goes a long way.

Anyway, rent a car in France so that you’ll have the flexibility to choose your destinations, stop whenever something catches your eye, and take your time soaking in the stunning views as you meander along the winding roads through the hills. If you know how to drive a manual, renting a car is usually much cheaper than renting an automatic transmission.

Romantic places #5. Loire Valley: Château Country

What makes it one of the most romantic places

Some say that the Loire Valley’s landscape is the best countryside in France. It truly is something you just have to see with your own eyes. It’s where majestic châteaux dot the horizon, lush vineyards that go on for miles, and the Loire River flows quietly through the region.

Kings and queens of France once made this region their playground, commissioning grand castles like Château de Chambord (one of the largest) and Château de Chenonceau (a uniquely spectacular château built across the Cher River).

Top romantic things to do

  • Tour the châteaux: Explore iconic castles like Château de Chambord and Château de Chenonceau, each with its own fascinating history.

  • Cycling through vineyards: During late-spring to early-fall, there are countless bike rental companies and tours that can take you through the vineyards.

Insider tips

  • Take a boat ride on the Loire River at sunset for a peaceful, romantic view of the châteaux reflected on the water.
  • Château de Chenonceau is super dog-friendly! Your pup has to be on-leash in the gardens, and you have to carry them if you’d like to tour the château’s interior.
  • If you’re spending summer in the city of Tours in the Loire Valley, locals suggest renting a kayak for a paddle along the Loire River. The best part? You can pull up along the riverbanks, where you’ll find lively bars, food stands, and live music waiting to set the perfect summer scene. Is this a vibe or what?

What makes it one of the most romantic places

The Dordogne Valley, just a couple of hours outside of Bordeaux, has a peaceful vibe and charming towns that make it a perfect retreat for couples looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern, everyday life.

A brief history of the Dordogne Valley

The area is known for its prehistoric caves and medieval towns is known for its rich in history. The valley was once a center of ancient human habitation, with incredible cave paintings found in Lascaux. The surrounding area’s castles and fortresses add a touch of magic, making it feel like stepping back in time.

Romantic places #8. Mont Saint-Michel: A Mystical “Island” Out at Sea

romantic places for couples

What makes it one of the most romantic places

Mont Saint-Michel is nothing short of magical. Rising dramatically from the sea, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a breathtaking combination of medieval architecture, mystic ambiance, and incredible natural beauty. It’s a place that feels suspended in time, making it the perfect backdrop for a romantic adventure. It even inspired the kingdom in the movie Tangled!

A brief history of Mont Saint-Michel

Mont Saint-Michel has been an important pilgrimage site for centuries. If you’re like me and thought that it was a castle on top of the rocky island, I’m sorry to say we weren’t quite on the money there. It’s actually an abbey that was originally founded in the 8th century.

Over the years, it has become a symbol of French history and resilience due to its long-standing role in French religious, cultural, and military history.

Top romantic things to do

  • Visit the Abbey: Explore the abbey and its impressive Gothic architecture and gorgeous views of the surrounding bay.
  • Wander the streets: Lose yourself in the maze of narrow alleys, charming shops, and quaint cafés within the village walls. (Are you catching on that wandering around and getting lost in beautiful cobblestone streets is the thing to do almost anywhere in France?)
  • Watch the tides: The island is best seen at high tide when it’s completely surrounded by water since it creates the image of a mystical island floating in the middle of the bay. However, visiting during low tide reveals sandbanks that make for a truly unique experience as well.

Insider tips

  • Try to time your visit with the tides. Watching the sea slowly engulf the island is a surreal, romantic experience.
